Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club

The Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club has been in existence for fifty years. The Club was established in 1974, in Victoria, BC. The registered non-profit Club plays a pivotal role in Canada’s oldest Chinese neighbourhood and is dedicated to the preservation of Chinese culture and heritage. The Club is very traditional and the only place in Canada to learn Hung Fut style Kung Fu. The Club has maintained and taught the traditions of Kung Fu and Lion Dance to all who are interested in learning. In addition, the Club offers its members a chance to explore their cultural heritage, and for others, it will be a truly immersive multicultural experience unlike any other.

The Club has played pivotal roles in the community from annual Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year) celebrations, Canada Day celebrations, Dragon Boat Festivals, and at prestigious functions such as business openings, as well as more personal functions such as weddings. The lion dance is a traditional Chinese folk history and an important part of traditional Kung Fu schools. Hung Fut was created nearly 400 years ago in the Southern Shaolin Monastery in Fujian Province, China. The Club is non-ranking (no belts) and non-competitive (no tournaments). Training involves groundwork, stances, and forms. When the basics are mastered, students move on to learn applications, weapons, and Lion dance.

This traditional Chinese heritage and what the Club is offering to the community is in danger of being lost due to social and economic pressures. The Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club is trying to maintain this unique tradition for future generations, but we need your help and support. With your support, the Club can continue to flourish and find a permanent practice space, and pass along training and tradition to future members as well as maintain and replace aging equipment.
